Sophie has played in a variety of masterclasses during her studies, working with players Derek Zadinski, Edicson Ruiz, Jeff Bradetich, Hal Robinson, Ira Gold, Sam Suggs, and Robin Kesselman. She has been the recipient of the David Tonkugoni Solo Competition Award and played Ernest Bloch’s Prayer with a Seattle Symphony string quartet. She has given several notable recitals, including repertoire such as J.S. Bach’s Cello Suite in D minor, his second Viola da Gamba Sonata in D Major, Tango Across the Border and Anna’s Promise by Andres Martin, and Tableau No. 5 by Tyson Davis.
Sophie Denhard has been playing classical orchestral bass for over 9 years. She has played professionally in the Chattanooga Symphony, Seattle’s Orquesta Northwest, the International Baccalaureate Ensemble, and Northwestern’s Kellogg School orchestral presentation under Dr. Stephen Alltop. Sophie is working towards auditions in local and regional orchestras in the greater Baltimore area, as well as the New World Symphony.
A primarily orchestral double bassist, Sophie began playing in orchestras as soon as she began learning the bass. She served as principal of the Seattle Youth Symphony, Northwestern Symphony Orchestra, and Peabody Symphony Orchestra, as well as the Sewanee Summer Music Festival Orchestra. Sophie participated in the National Youth Orchestra program in the summer of 2020 studying under Robin Kesselman and Alex Hanna, and attended the Honeywell Arts Academy Wabass Institute in the summer of 2024 studying under Hal Robinson, Ranaan Meyer, and Eric Carlson.
Sophie is currently earning her Master's degree at the Peabody Conservatory studying with Nina DeCesare. She attended Northwestern University for her Bachelor’s degree studying with Andrew Raciti, and studied with Todd Gowers in the Seattle area in middle and high school.
